Icelandic moss is a lichen. It consist of algae and fungus growing together
in a mutually helpful relationship. It is shrub-like plant, with crinkled,
gray-green to dark brown forked branches. The lichen grows well in Iceland
because it is one of the least polluted countries in the world.
The useful components are Lichenin and isolechenin, galactomannans, glucans,
lichenolic acids and aliphatic lichen acid. Icelandic Moss is strongly
antibiotic, expectorant and anti-oxidant. It soothes irritated tissues,
especially mucous membranes and is often used in cough medications.
Some people apply Iceland moss directly to poorly healing wounds.
